Simply put, women lie, all the time, about everything, and don't believe that men can be so inhuman as not to lie as they do. And this is the reason for women's literature, which consists in all its major and lesser forms (romance novel, gothic novel, and soap opera) of women explaining (lying) to other women (about) what men really mean. Thus all the blather in women's magazines about "men's secrets (they'll never tell you)." Presumably, if the fact that men don't, usually, lie were understood by women, it would seem accusatory and unfair to them.
